Why we sandblast before every re-stucco
Paint changes how stucco works. It seals the wall so moisture can't move in and out, and it eventually peels, flakes and blisters. If new stucco is glued over paint and the paint fails, the new stucco fails with it.
Sandblasting removes 75 to 100% of the old paint and deteriorated stucco with a high-velocity stream of air and sand. The rough surface it leaves gives new stucco a mechanical bond. We won't re-stucco over a painted surface that hasn't been properly sandblasted.

Sandblasting questions
Can't you just hydro-blast and stucco over the paint?
Some contractors do, but if the paint underneath fails, the new stucco goes with it. We consider sandblasting mandatory for a re-stucco that lasts.
Does sandblasting need a permit?
Sandblasting doesn't require a construction permit. Our equipment is registered with the EPA and the Air Pollution Control District, and we're a licensed California contractor.
How messy is it?
Sandblasting is the dusty part. We contain it with tarps, ask neighbors to close windows and move cars, and wash everything down afterward.
